In the beginning level of our training with you and your dog, we start with the basic language of dog. After all, they speak dog and we speak human. One of the first things we do is mend the communication gap. We teach you how to be clear in your requests so your dog has no question what you are asking. We also teach you to listen to what your dog is communicating to you—either vocally or through physical behaviors.
We create a game plan of your vision and goals for your relationship with your new family member.
Reward-Based Training Is a Treat!
Reward-based reinforcement training is based on simple psychology. When you reward what you want, you will get more of that behavior. When you ignore what you don’t like, your dog will not be motivated to repeat it. Teach your dog the verbs—the action words you want your buddy to learn!
Rather than focusing on what your dog is doing that is unacceptable, we’ll teach you to focus on what you want her or him to do. It’s called “incompatible behavior substitution” and it works! For example, let’s say your dog is chewing on your shoe. Instead of focusing on that behavior, you focus on an incompatible behavior that IS acceptable, such as chewing on a chew toy. When you positively reinforce this behavior, your new family member learns that this is the behavior you want—and the one you will reward.
